In Clinical Biochemistry the key focus has been osteoporosis, a disorder most common in women after menopause. A staff member was awarded a grant to study the effects of oestrogens and androgens in an animal model of osteoporosis and another staff member published a paper detailing an improvement to the calcium absorption test which can now be introduced into routine use. It also:

• Published papers on the best means of diagnosis and treatment of osteoporosis.
• Established collaboration with Shriner’s Hospital in Montreal to investigate the role of vitamin D in an animal model.
• Contributed to knowledge of the role of zinc in inflammation and other conditions.
• Improved the Detectacol screen for bowel cancer
