Metallothionein in relation to:
1.Pre- and post-natal zinc homeostasis
2.Zinc absorption in marginal zinc states
A Rofe, P Coyle, J Philcox
Metallothionein is a cysteine rich, metal-binding protein which influences zinc homeostasis, particularly during foetal development and inflammatory states. An understanding of zinc absorption/secretion in the GI tract is central to these studies and enterohepatic zinc balance will be investigated. Additional roles in protection against heavy metal and drug toxicity have been demonstrated.
Zinc redistribution and associated metabolic changes during inflammation have been investigated and protection against heavy metal and drug toxicity have been demonstrated.
The novelty and strength of this work ties in the use of mice which cannot make metallothionein I and II (metallthionein-null), the major isoforms. This work is done in collaboration with the department of Gastroenterology and with the Womens and Children's Hospital's Child Health Unit.
