Haematology's functions include:
- Performance of clinical research to advance medical knowledge
and to introduce new technology, drugs and biological agents to
the South Australian community,
- Provision of a comprehensive range of blood and blood products
for transfusion for the Royal Adealide Hospital and private practitioners
including a comprehensive consultancy service in Transfusion Medicine.
- Provision of a range of haemopoietic stem-cell products for bone-marrow transplantation for the Royal Adelaide Hospital and private practitioners.
- Provision of a bone-marrow biopsy service and the diagnosis and management of blood cell disorders.
- Management of the State Red Cell Reference Laboratory for
the resolution of difficult compatibility testing problems and the investigation of the immune haemolysis referred by other laboratories.
- Co-ordination of antenatal and perinatal diagnostic testing
for red cell antibody related problems.
- Management of the State
Cancer Cytogenetic Laboratory for the identification with measurement
of genetic defects associated with cancers and leukaemias.
- Management of the Special Haemostasis Laboratory for the identification
of bleeding or clotting tendencies, with particular reference
to those caused by hereditary effects.
- Undergraduate and postgraduate teaching and training for the
Royal Adelaide Hospital, Universities of Adelaide and South Australia.
