Why study in the Division of Human Immunology? Whilst the Division has a strong background in immunology, laboatories housed within Human Immunology cover a wide range of subject areas- ranging from microRNAs to mechanisms regulating blood vessel formation. The senior researchers heading each laboratory have strong standings in their respective fields and have many active collaborations, both nationally and internationally. Being a part of the Hanson Institue/IMVS, researchers within Human Immunology have access to a wide range of state-of-the-art equipment, facilities and trained individuals. This allows for cutting-edge research to be carried out with ease and circumvents the need to trek around Adelaide to use suitable pieces of equipment. A problem many students have in considering undertaking their studies in the IMVS is that they feel they will be isolated from their university. However the IMVS is located in close proximity to both the University of Adelaide and University of South Australia in the Royal Adelaide Hospital campus. Students undertaking projects with a clinical focus will find the closeness of the Royal Adelaide Hospital highly advantageous. Students will also gain valuable experience by working in a well-regarded, government biomedical research institute. There are also many other students, both Honours and PhD, that have chosen to carry out projects within the Division. Apart from having an invaluable support basis by talking to students who are going through a similar experience as you, the social life is great! Choosing a project and a laboratory in which to undertake your Honours or post-graduate studies can be a daunting task, however a great place to start is to find a project in an area that interests you and will give you the opportunity to learn valuable techniques. PhD Projects Available Cell Growth and Differentiation Laboratory Molecular Signalling Laboratory Vascular Biology and Cell Trafficking Laboratory Honours Projects Available Cell Growth and Differentiation Laboratory Molecular Signalling Laboratory Vascular Biology and Cell Trafficking Laboratory Scholarships Available Potential students should first find a supervisor and then jointly prepare a project outline suitable for a scholarship application, typically in the September/October period. The Hanson Institute Annual Report is a particularly good resource for identifying subject areas of interest and potential supervisors. Scholarships available for students studying in the Division of Human Immunology include: Australian Post-Graduate Award (PhD) University of Adelaide Scholarships (PhD & Honours) Royal Adelaide Hospital Scholarships (PhD (Dawes) & Honours) National Health and Medical Research Council Scholarships National Heart Foundation Scholarships Summer Student Program The Hanson Institute is not offering summer vacation scholarships over the 2006-2007 summer period. However, students can still carry out a summer vacation project in the Division and obtain summer vacation funding from the following sources: |
