Direct dialing is where one computer would use a modem to dial into another directly to send or receive results. There are two alternatives to using this system, depending on which computer initiates the dialing process.

1. Your computer dials into the IMVS.

In this case, you would need to initiate the call to the IMVS manually. This is normally done by launching the IMVS dialing program when you wish to check for new results, although this can be automated using a "scheduling" software product.
The advantage of this method is that you can control exactly when the transfers are done. If you use the modem and phone line for other things (such as dialing into the Interent), you can easily work around these times.
2. The IMVS dials into your computer.
In this case, the IMVS will dial into your computer when new reports are completed.
This method has the advantage that you receive results as soon as they are available. You do not need to do anything, this is done automatically so there is less human intervention. However, the modem and phone line needs to be dedicated to receiving IMVS pathology results and can not be used for other purposes.
