Introduction In addition to providing a routine and specialised pathology service for clinicians in the Royal Adelaide Hospital, the laboratory performs testing for metropolitan and country general practitioners. The laboratory is actively involved in training and educational activities and is the sole teaching laboratory in the state for the training of cytology professionals. The laboratory also has a strong focus on clinical and applied research. Workload and Type of Specimems Processed The majority of specimens processed are cervical or Pap smears and these constitute approximately 80% of the total. The remainder includes non-gynaecological specimens such as urines, effusions and sputa. These specimens are examined for the presence of cancer cells.
