Introduction
The Cytopathology laboratory is an important section within the Division of Tissue Pathology.

In addition to providing a routine and specialised pathology service for clinicians in the Royal Adelaide Hospital, the laboratory performs testing for metropolitan and country general practitioners.

The laboratory is actively involved in training and educational activities and is the sole teaching laboratory in the state for the training of cytology professionals. The laboratory also has a strong focus on clinical and applied research.

Workload and Type of Specimems Processed
The IMVS Cytology Service is the largest non-private provider of cytology services in the state. Approximately 76,000 specimens are examined annually

The majority of specimens processed are cervical or Pap smears and these constitute approximately 80% of the total.

The remainder includes non-gynaecological specimens such as urines, effusions and sputa. These specimens are examined for the presence of cancer cells.

Support for Research
The laboratory has a strong focus on clinical and applied research and is continually investigating new technologies to improve the accuracy of cytological diagnosis and service to customers.

NATA/ISO 9002 Accreditation
The laboratory maintains high standards of laboratory practices and quality systems in accordance with NATA and ISO 9002 requirements.
