About
the Laboratory
The
laboratory is located in the Institute
of Medical and Veterinary Science and is closely affiliated
with other campus institutions including the Hanson
Institute, Royal
Adelaide Hospital and the University
of Adelaide. The campus provides a full array of patient services
using the latest technologies. The laboratory also offers the opportunity
for world class researchers to undertake research into bone diseases
affecting patients referred for treatment. Many of these researchers
are internationally renowned for their contributions to understanding
the physiology of the human skeleton.
Research
interests within the group are diverse, but focus on understanding
the effects of musculoskeletal disease, injury, ageing, and repair
on joint and tissue function. The Laboratory is associated with
the large research-oriented Hanson
Institute and the University
of Adelaide. As a result the Laboratory has access to a wide
range of state of the art research facilities that include a histology
laboratory, a scanning electron microscope facility, confocal microscopy,
in vivo and in vitro microcomputed tomography systems, an image
analysis facility, molecular biology laboratory, a cell culture
laboratory, biochemistry, mechanical testing facility, electronics
and machine shop. In addition the Laboratory has strong collaborative
research programmes with the other two universities of South Australia,
the University of South Australia
and Flinders University
as well as national and international research linkages.
Our
Mission
The
mission of the laboratory is to carry out original and innovative
research that leads to a better understanding of bone and joint
structure and function as well as practical outcomes for treatment
of musculoskeletal disease.
Our
Aims
Undertake
basic scientific research with a strong relevance to the
clinical needs of patients.
Maintain
a strong focus on internationally competitive research.
Ensure
that researchers have access to necessary research
infrastructure.
Apply
to government and non-government bodies to fund research.
Support
and mentor research staff especially early career
researchers.
Support
diagnostic staff development (technical, scientific and medical)
and development of laboratory diagnostic capabilities in the Division
of Tissue Pathology.
Support
teaching and training of undergraduate, honours and PhD
students.
