Large Animal Research and Imaging Facility (LARIF)

The Large Animal Research and Imaging Facility (LARIF) was created as a South Australian node of National Imaging Facility (NIF) in 2008 for Australian and international researchers as a joint initiative of SA Pathology, University of Adelaide and University of South Australia.

LARIF provides state-of-the-art imaging of animals and materials for the Australian research community under National Collaborative Research Infrastructure Strategy (NCRIS) scheme.

Located at Gilles Plains, LARIF provides a range of leading-edge imaging and general veterinary services:

  • Magnetic Resonance Imaging (MRI)
  • X-ray, DEXA, Image Intensifier, Ultrasound
  • Telemetry
  • Surgery and surgical workshops
  • Supply of research animals
  • GLP recognised pre-clinical studies/ R&D services
  • Mouse and rat health monitoring service
  • Research support
  • Grant-funded research
  • Comparative Pathology
  • SABRENet ultra-fast optical broadband connection

Researchers can also explore opportunities for:

  • Development of MRI-guided surgical techniques
  • Experimental surgery training
  • Comparative Pathology training
  • Exposure to research methods – Veterinary students
  • Assistance of professional radiographers to run MRI – timetabling, charging, protocol development
  • Partnerships – research groups with their own MRI capability
  • Training, teaching, workshops

Australian Phenomics Network (APN)

Established under the Australian Government’s National Collaborative Research Infrastructure Strategy, the Australian Phenomics Network (APN) provides infrastructure for the Australian scientific community enabling them to share experience and resources, and to establish and archive mouse models of human and animal disease. The necropsy and histopathology services we provide are essential steps in defining and validating those models in research and pre-clinical studies.

The SA Pathology Veterinary Division is one of two nodes supported by the APN to provide necropsy and histopathology diagnosis to Australian researchers. Staff engaged in this service have extensive histology, diagnostic and electronic imaging experience. A comparative Pathologist is also available at the site.

 Our services include:

  • Full necropsy and histopathology service
  • Additional pathology tests (special stains, immunohistochemistry, ultrastructural pathology, confocal microscopy, morphometry)
  • Discussion and interpretation of results with a veterinary comparative pathologist
  • Interactive interrogation of histological sections using our Digital Slide Scanner
  • A full health monitoring service (serology, PCR, histopathology, bacteriology and parasitology)

An APN service request form and APN price list are available for download.
