After graduation, Dr Chapman trained in Anatomical Pathology in Auckland and became a Fellow of The Royal College of Pathologists of Australasia.

Following a year as a Senior Registrar in Cytology she was appointed as a Specialist Histopathologist at Waikato Hospital, Hamilton, New Zealand, where she continued a special interest in cytopathology. This led to her appointment as Head of Cytology for the Hamilton MedLab private laboratory.

In 1998, Dr Chapman relocated to Adelaide and joined the IMVS as an Anatomical Pathologist entirely working in the Cytology Department.
