Low Potassium (Hypokalaemia)
Hypokalaemia is frequently drug-induced or due to abnormal fluid loss.
Is it drug induced?
- diuretic
- steriods
If the hypokalaemia is accompanied by a raised bicarbonate (alkalosis), think renal loss.
If there is no alkalosis, consider renal tubular acidosis or intestinal fluid loss.
If the patient is not on diuretics, measuring urinary potassium will determine if the loss is renal or not.
