Electronic Results Download Software

Overview

The IMVS produces pathology reports for clinicians in a number of ways. Traditionally, reports are printed on IMVS stationery and delivered to the place of request.

Another delivery option is to send report copies electronically via a secure and encrypted process to a computer using Electronic Data Interchange (EDI).

This process involves the report recipient using either a Windows PC or Macintosh computer on which they will typically be using a clinical / patient management program.

In order to ensure confidentiality, the IMVS utilises the Public Key Infrastructure (PKI) encryption system, which is implemented via the GNU Privacy Guard (GPG).

Access Reports

Reports can be accessed by logging in via the internet using the HTTPS (secure web) protocol.

Report Formats

Reports are available from the IMVS in different formats including:

HL7 Health Level 7 (HL7) is fast becoming the industry standard for pathology results. This format can provide greater benefits to clinicians including graphing and auto population of data when using certain assessment tools (depending on the clinical application).
PIT Pathology Information Transfer (PIT) format has been the default format utilised by various service providers of health information. Most Australian medical software packages with a pathology module can receive result data in PIT format.
Note: Considerable effort within the health informatics arena has seen the development and implementation of HL7 pathology standards for electronic transfer of clinical information (see above).
RTF Rich Text Format (RTF) representation of standard IMVS pathology reports, suitable for viewing using Word. The RTF format can include page breaks and can also be used to print reports once received.
