Choice Article on Pathology Gap Fees

Choice magazine has recently featured IMVS in an article about Pathology Gap Fees. This article highlights how patients can face large gap payments for pathology, but using a public provider such as the IMVS provides a gap-free alternative.

A decrease in Medicare rebates for pathology in the 2009 Federal Budget has resulted in a push from private pathology providers to increase the number of people paying an out-of-pocket gap payment.

Although these gap payments are usually capped, as shown in the table below, private pathology fees can be a considerable burden on patients.

IMVS is featured in a case study, which outlines how income is derived from Medicare in the form of the bulk bill rebate for pathology. This revenue is then used to provide a high-quality 24-hour service to hospitals and doctors across the whole state, and provide a surplus to fund medical research within the Centre for Cancer Biology.
