Grant awarded for SA Cancer Genomics Facility
IMVS Pathology's Centre for Cancer Biology has successfully won a bid to establish the South Australian Cancer Genomics Facility, with $3.5 million awarded by the Australian Cancer Research Foundation, $1.05 million from the South Australian Government and $525,000 from Cancer Council SA.
As featured in an article in The Advertiser (May 18, 2011), the facility will enable scientists to focus their research on faulty genes and develop tailored treatments.
This is the first time South Australia will have a facility of this capacity, with state-of-the-art equipment such as gene sequencers, and a team of senior scientists to analyse and apply findings. It will facilitate discovery and innovation by our researchers and help their efforts in developing better diagnostics and more effective individualised treatments.
The research outcomes from the SA Cancer Genomics Facility will contribute to the eventual reality of personalised medicine with fewer long-term side effects and better patient outcomes, as the way specific genes work with medicines is increasingly understood.
The facility is expected to open at IMVS Pathology's Frome Road site in 2012.
